What to do after being in an accident with your work vehicle

If you regularly drive a work vehicle or a rental vehicle, then you should know the steps to take in case of an accident. Even if you are a safe driver, sometimes there is no way of avoiding accidents caused by other drivers. Knowing what to do will help protect your rights and your pocketbook.

Generally speaking, you want to take the same steps after an accident involving a work vehicle or a rental vehicle that you should take following an accident involving your own personal vehicle. These seven steps include:

  1. Take pictures, if you can, of the accident scene, including the damage to the vehicles, license plates, street signs and road debris.
  2. Call the police so that an officer can come to take statements and record the accident.
  3. Exchange insurance information with all other drivers who were involved in the accident.
  4. Seek medical attention, even if you aren't sure that you need it. (We explained why this step is so important in this post.)
  5. Leave your vehicle where it is following the accident until police arrive and permit you to move it.
  6. Contact an experienced personal injury lawyer who can make sure that your rights are protected.
  7. File a claim with your insurance provider, but don't give a recorded statement to the insurance company.

Following the accident, the insurance companies involved have one goal and that is to minimize your claim. You need an aggressive lawyer on your side who will take the reins in your case in order to maximize your compensation.

When you accident involves a work vehicle or a rental vehicle, the situation gets complicated. It gets even more complicated if there were any serious injuries in the accident.

Even if you or your employer are insured, it's still very important to remember that these businesses have their own best interests in mind. You need someone who will stand up for yours.
